Why exercise?

Hi this is Kate and today I am going to be talking about why we need to exercise.

Regular physical activity boosts our muscles and helps our endurance so daily tasks become easier.

When we exercise it also sends nutrients around to the tissues of our body so that our cardiovascular system, our heart and lungs, work more efficiently.

After the age of thirty our muscle mass begins to decline by between anything between three and eight percent each decade. After the age of sixty it can decline by a percent and a half each year.

Having said all that, it is never too late to restart an exercise routine or indeed to begin one if you have not exercised at all. Find something that you enjoy doing. You will need to aim for two and a half hours each week, which is about is twenty minutes a day. Personally I try to have a twenty minute walk each day. I have made that a regular habit.

If you go for a group exercise class, find a small class and a teacher who is sympathetic to the fact that you are a relative beginner.

That is all I have to say about why we should exercise. After all we want to have a healthy older age and it is never too late to start to do that.

Thank you for listening and I will see you again in my next video.
